There are many super foods or power foods in this world and I can’t possibly talk about them all here.

What I would like to do is present a few of them in a manner that allows you to pick the ones that will benefit you the most.  If you have any health concerns I think you will appreciate this format.

Brain Foods

If you are interested in increasing your mental health there are many super foods that have been proven to assist in that area.

Foods such as:

  • lean protein like turkey and chicken,
  • high fiber carbohydrates that don't raise blood sugar,
  • low glycemic foods,
  • foods that contain omega three fatty acids like fish, walnuts and avocados

Age Defying Foods

Dr. Perricone (seen on Oprah) lists 10 super foods because of their link to what he calls, “The Brain-Beauty Connection”.

You may be interested in these foods for their ability to slow the aging process, as well as prevent diabetes, obesity, wrinkles and many degenerative diseases.

They are rich in either Essential Fatty Acids, Antioxidants or Fiber. The Acai Berry is rich in all three.

Lung Disease

Red Wine

Heart Disease

According to Better Homes and Gardens there are 10 Super Foods for Heart Disease.

They say that if you eat unsaturated fats, like omega-3 fatty acids and olive oil, your body should reduce triglycerides. Triglycerides are thought to stop blood clotting and keep your arteries from becoming clogged with plaque.

A diet rich in soluble fiber, helps to lower your LDL cholesterol. Here are the 10 foods they recommend:

Mackerel
Walnuts
Tofu
Plums
Prunes
 
Kidney Beans
Chickpeas
Barley

The American Heart Association lists some other foods they feel will help you protect your heart health. Some of them may reduce cholesterol levels; some reduce the amount of damage cholesterol may do and still others reduce your body's ability to produce blood clots that jam arteries and trigger heart attacks. Here is a partial list.

Don't just pick one or two and expect it will protect you from heart attack. Remember, a balance of healthy foods is best.
