Most people don’t give much thought to food digestion. Unless your body is having issues with processing and eliminating the food you eat, this subject would never cross your mind. For example …

When I say nutrition what do you think of?

Like most people, I expect you probably think of the food you eat or the supplements you take but are you aware of nature’s complex process for getting the nutrients from food to the cells of your body?

As I have said many times on “Cellular Nutrition Guaranteed” …

You are not what YOU eat, you are what your CELLS eat!

because …

The True Definition of Nutrition is to Nourish Your Cells.

The Seven Steps of Cellular Nutrition

In order to accomplish cellular nutrition, nature follows several steps or processes of food digestion:
  • Ingestion
  • Digestion
  • Absorption
  • Circulation
  • Assimilation
  • Metabolism
  • Detoxification
Each of these steps builds on the effectiveness of the preceding step so if any one is impaired the ones which follow will also have issues.

Ingestion - The first step, ingestion, is probably the most obvious and is simply a matter of choice; hence the saying …

You Are What You Eat!

If you make healthy food choices you will supply the nutrients your body needs to function properly and adequately process each of the other steps.

Unfortunately, we all make poor choices and these poor choices jeopardize the food digestion process and ultimately result in poor metabolism but ...

Even when we choose the right foods we often eat too much. Fortunately, for times of overindulgence, there is something you can do from a nutritional standpoint.

I am referring to an enzyme based product which will significantly reduce the fat your body absorbs  as well as assist to utilize carbohydrates more efficiently.

Our modern diets can often be very high in fats and sugars, and many of us pay a hefty price in health problems and weight gain because of them.

WARNING!

Be aware of potentially harmful “fat blockers” and “fat burners” on the market!

Fat Burning Enzymes such as lipase can be very helpful in processing these fats and sugars contained in our food as well as stored in the cells of our bodies.

After the initial step of food ingestion we must move inside and discuss what your body does internally (food digestion) with the food you eat.

This is where a modification of the above saying is required because, in actual fact, you are not what YOU eat …

You Are What Your CELLS Eat!

The remaining 6 steps can be covered in two parts.

Part 1 - Food Digestion and Absorption

The key to Cellular Nutrition!

Once you have consumed your food (good or bad) your body is tasked with food digestion or, more accurately, converting it into a useable format.

You Can Help

Supplementing with digestive enzymes reduces your body's involvement in the food digestion process.

DIGESTION is the process of converting food into molecules that can be ...

ABSORBED through the intestine into your blood stream.

Incomplete food digestion results in incomplete absorption.

This is why it is so important to have a healthy intestine and healthy digestive organs.

Raw foods contain natural enzymes which help with this conversion but cooking and processing kills most of them. As a result your body must use its own limited supply to break down and absorb the nutrients. This places a drain on your body’s reserves; reserves which could be used to protect your system from outside attack.

Speaking of enzymes …

Enzymes are complex proteins which regulate all aspects of body function and are found in the cells of all living creatures. Enzymes can be divided into three categories: digestive enzymes, metabolic enzymes, and food enzymes.

Digestive Enzymes are produced by your body in the salivary glands, the pancreas and the mucosal cells that line your intestine. Different enzymes will breakdown different components of food. For example:

  • protease enzymes break down protein into peptides, and
  • peptidase then breaks the peptides into usable amino acids that can be absorbed by the mucosal cells of the intestine
Food enzymes are found naturally in food and are also designed to match the nutrient composition; in other words:
  • carbohydrate foods contain amylase
  • protein foods contain protease
Food enzymes assist in the digestion process but, as I said above, our cooking and processing methods destroy most of them before they are eaten. When you eat processed foods you “rob” your body of the energy it needs for growth, maintenance and repair of its tissues and organ systems.

Relieving this burden from your body can be accomplished by taking digestive enzymes to replace those lost in food preparation. This assist is very helpful because, as well known enzyme researcher Dr Edward Howell pointed out:

“Each one of us is given a limited supply of bodily enzyme energy at birth. This supply, like the energy supply in a new battery, has to last a lifetime. The faster you use up your enzyme supply, the shorter your life. By supplying food enzymes, you use up less of your body’s enzyme reserves.”

The role of absorption is to transfer beneficial substances from the intestinal lumen across cell membranes into circulation for transport to your liver and the cells of your body.

Absorption is not the same as Utilization.

Just because a nutrient is absorbed does not mean that the body will utilize it. The nutrient must be in a form that is recognizable and useable by the body with all of its cofactors present.

In order to support healthy circulation and pancreatic functions there are a number of herbs and minerals which help maintain insulin production and fight free radicals created by excess glucose production.

Supplementation and exercise is important to the management of diabetes, Syndrome X, and blood sugar regulation. A number of nutrients and herbs have been researched for their critical roles in insulin production, insulin function and healthy glucose metabolism.

  • Amino acid chelated minerals essential for healthy glucose metabolism
  • Antioxidant ingredients like grape seed extract, zinc and manganese will help your body fight the free radicals created by excess glucose production.
  • Chromium Chelavite
  • Manganese
  • Chromium
  • Zinc

PART 2 - Immunity

In addition to food digestion, a major responsibility of your gastrointestinal tract is to protect your body from toxic substances that enter the system.

Probiotics -Your health is dependant on the presence of at least 400 kinds of microorganisms found in the gastrointestinal tract, and a healthy balance of this “Friendly Flora” is essential to the proper functioning of all systems of your body, especially the immune system.

This intestinal micro flora is a rich ecosystem composed of metabolically active microorganisms living close to where nutrients are absorbed into your blood. They act as part of your immune system by:

  • Preventing infectious organisms from gaining a foothold in your gastrointestinal tract
  • Enhancing the function of immune cells
Your very life depends on a healthy level of this friendly flora!

Clean Your “House” - Arguably one of the best things you can do to keep your body healthy is to maintain a clean healthy colon. Effective elimination of toxins and refuse from your system is vital and I have often heard that it may be the single most important function to protect your body from almost any disease you can name.

Support for your digestive tract can be as simple as taking a blend of soothing aloe and all-natural antioxidants and nutrients to promote gentle cleansing of your colon.

As you can see the process of food digestion and the utilization of the nutrients obtained through this process has many areas susceptible to attack and/or failure.

In an ideal world we would obtain all the protection we need through the consumption of healthy foods and the positive effects of an active lifestyle. Unfortunately, in this fast paced world with its processed foods and tendencies towards a sedentary lifestyle, nutritional supplementation has become more and more important.

The links on this page will take you to other pages which should help you in your search for ways to ensure your digestive system is doing the best it can to keep your body healthy and active for many years to come.

Remember, not all supplements are created equally. Make sure the nutrition you purchase is enzyme based and comes from natural whole food sources.
