Childhood Obesity Ask the Doctor
Dr Allan on Childhood Obesity
Dear Dr. Allan,
I believe having children has been hazardous to my health. Nine years ago I was athletic and fit.
I ate oatmeal for breakfast, rarely ate red meat or dessert and never had white bread or potatoes.
Since children, breakfast is harried and stressed, lunch is fast food and then there is the weekend birthday party trap of cake and ice cream.
I have gained 25 pounds and don’t know what to do?
Good lord – I look in the mirror and ask, “What happened?” Please help!
Jackie
Dear Jackie,
With the growing concern over childhood obesity, an increased amount of attention is being paid to the eating habits of our children.
However, it is also important to realize the eating habits of children can be a hidden health hazard for parents.
Eating unfinished macaroni and cheese rather than throwing it away may seem like a good idea at the time, but in the long run no one benefits.
Simplifying your shopping list with buying white bread and whole milk because your child prefers them is not in the best interest of your family’s health.
Stopping at your local fast food restaurant and ordering a “kids” meal while grabbing a whopper and fries for yourself because you are pressed for time negatively impacts your waistline, while developing in your child a taste for unhealthy foods and portion sizes.
I realize that it seems no matter how hard you try to make sure your family eats right, there is something about the multiple pressures of parenthood that lead healthy, vigilant people to consume things that they would never before have dreamed putting into their body.
I know you understand the danger is not just the weight gain, but the fact that many foods we eat when in a hurry for time actually lead to long term health problems and worsen chronic conditions by raising blood sugar, blood fats and blood pressure.
So, here is a simple solution. For breakfast both you and your children enjoy an Enzyme Diet shake.
This Super Food provides a great, low fat, low sugar, natural way to get excellent nutrition in a hurry.
Your entire family will enjoy Dr. Allan’s TED recipes found in The Enzyme Diet Tube Program.
These recipes will provide for variety that many people crave.
You can have a second shake for lunch and follow the easy meal recipes for dinner to lose up to 25 pounds in just 12 weeks.
Your children will benefit as you grocery shop for natural whole foods and eliminate those that are overly refined and processed. Offer your child an ENERGY bar instead of the cookie jar for a healthy snack.
Take a few extra minutes to walk them to school instead of taking the car.
A few minutes of exercise will clear your mind and give all of you more energy for the day ahead.
You are the role model for your child and teaching them good eating habits is a gift that will benefit them with a lifetime of better health.
By making some of these simple choices once again, you too, will look into the mirror and discover the healthier you.
