Bioflavonoids or Flavonoids

Bioflavonoids, commonly referred to as flavonoids, are a class of very potent antioxidants. Flavonoids are water soluble molecules belonging to the polyphenol family found in plants.

Together with carotenoids they are responsible for the coloring of fruits, vegetables and herbs.

Study of factors affecting health and illness has shown that heart disease, cancer and cerebrovascular disease (disease of the blood vessels supplying the brain) are positively affected by consumption of flavonoids.

Flavonoids such as quercetin, rutin, hesperidin and isoflavones are becoming very popular because of their numerous health effects.

Many of them work to strengthening capillaries and other connective tissues in your body and play an important role in preventing heart disease.

Others are well known for properties such as:

  • anti-allergic,
  • anti-inflammatory,
  • anti-viral
  • anti-cancer,
  • antioxidant

One of the more common flavonoids, quercetin, may even have possible health benefits if you are suffering from diabetes.

According to research, flavonoids work so closely with vitamin C that many of the positive effects attributed to the vitamin are actually a work of the flavonoids.
