B5 Vitamin (Pantothenic Acid)
Pantothenic acid, also known as the B5 vitamin, is used by your body to break down carbohydrates, proteins and fats for energy.
There have been numerous claims that pantothenic acid is effective in the treatment of breathing problems, nerve damage, itching and other skin problems, but so far they haven’t been proven In clinical trials.
Together with biotin, pantothenic acid is necessary for the production and utilization of fat and amino acids.
Vitamin B5 is used to manufacture hormones, red blood cells, and acetylcholine which is an important neurotransmitter. (Carries signals between nerve cells)
It is also known to support the healing of wound and the synthesis of hormones.
Pantothenic Acid is Not Toxic
There are two categories of vitamins: water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins.
Pantothenic Acid, along with the rest of the B-complex group, is known as water-soluble because it dissolves in water and is therefore non toxic. When your body is satisfied with its Vitamin B supply it eliminates the excess in your urine.
Vitamins are easily destroyed by food storage and preparation so it is a good idea to replenish them through natural vitamin supplementation.
Food Sources
A normal diet usually contains adequate supplies of the B vitamin so deficiencies are rare. B-complex multivitamins usually include pantothenic acid.
Some good food sources of pantothenic acid are:
- peas and beans (except green beans)
- lean meat,
- poultry,
- fish
- whole-grain cereals
To ensure you get the most from the foods you eat refrigerate fresh produce and store grains away from strong light.
