Astragalus
Chinese Immune System Booster

Of all Chinese Medicines, astragalus (Huang-qi or Yellow Leader) is probably the most common. It has been used as a tonic in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2.000 years and is famous for its qualities as an immune system booster.

It is a member of the legume or bean family. The sweet tasting roots are black with a pale yellow core.

Chinese herbalists use it to increase the vital energy called “Qi” (Pronounced key) of a weakened person. It is often used in conjunction with other herbs to promote overall health.

Yellow Leader is thought to have the following benefits:

  • Increased immunity
  • protect your heart against viral attacks
  • Heal burns and abscesses
  • offset the effects of cancer therapy
  • assist in urination
It has traditionally been used in Chinese medicine to treat
  • the common cold
  • diarrhea
  • arthritis
  • nervousness
  • asthma
  • weakness
It is important to note that not all plants in the family are beneficial to your health; some may even be toxic. The plant we discuss on this page is a species called astragalus membranaceus

What does Research Show?

In studies involving patients suffering from cancer or AIDS, researchers have found that taking compounds from the root results in an increase in the functioning of T-cells. T-cells are key fighters in your body’s immune defense network.

Doctors have also found that compounds from the root may protect heart cells from damage by the Coxsackie B virus. Even the common cold appears to be positively affected by this herb.

Side Affects?

No dangerous side effects have been reported for this herb but some have indicated that they experience abdominal bloating and loose stools. If you experience any uncomfortable symptoms simply reduce your consumption until your body adapts to it.

If extreme discomfort occurs, discontinue consuming it and your symptoms should abate.
